Group Therapy

My experience as a group therapist:

I have been a group therapist for over 25 years and currently co-lead three groups with Travis Sebera. We have both trained in Modern Analytic Group Therapy at the Center for Group Studies (CGS) in New York City and in Austin training groups led by CGS faculty.

Why group?

As children you first learned to see yourself in the eyes of a parent, a family, your peers. These reflections may or may not have been accurate or helpful. In group therapy you have the opportunity as an adult to see yourself through the eyes of fellow group members. You learn to say what you feel in the moment and to hear how people respond to you. Over time you can evaluate the truth of what is said and take in what is useful. Eventually you can weave this understanding into who you are becoming and make it your own. As you sit with others and respond to them, you escape your solitary self and learn how to connect and draw closer.

Group therapy provides an opportunity to learn to “Feel, think, and say what comes to mind in session so that outside you can feel and think everything and say what is helpful in getting along with people.” *
